Heard It in Class? Here’s What It Means
Here are some of the everyday phrases you’ll hear when you step into a Pilates space, whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth. These are the kinds of terms that show up in nearly every class: simple cues, body awareness prompts, and foundational ideas that help you move with more connection and ease. You don’t need to memorize them, just start to notice. Over time, they become second nature!
1. Core
This is your body’s center. Think abs, back, hips, and glutes. In Pilates, almost everything starts here. It’s where your strength and stability come from.
2. Powerhouse
An old-school Pilates term, which is another way to talk about your core, your powerhouse, is what supports every movement.
3. Neutral Spine
Your spine’s natural shape is when you’re standing tall or lying down in good alignment. Not too arched, not too flat. Just right.
4. C-Curve
You’ll hear this during ab work, it’s when you gently round your spine, like making a C shape, to help scoop and engage your belly.
5. Pilates Stance
Heels together, toes slightly turned out. A small V shape with your feet. It helps turn on your inner thighs and find good posture from the ground up.
6. Articulation
A fancy word for rolling through your spine, one bone at a time. You might do this during a roll-up or a bridge. Slow and steady wins here.
7. Imprint
When you gently press your low back toward the mat by engaging your abs. It gives extra support, especially during core moves.
8. Tabletop
A go-to position where your knees are bent and lifted over your hips, shins parallel to the floor. It’s like holding your legs on an invisible table.
9. Breath
Pilates breathing is intentional. Usually in through the nose, out through the mouth. It helps you move better and stay present.
10. Reformer
A machine with a sliding carriage with springs and straps. You’ll find it in many studios, and it adds resistance (and support) to your practice.
