Breathwork Techniques That Improve Stress Levels

At Upstate, breath is everything

Breath is at the heart of everything we do—from Yoga flows to Reformer burnouts and high-energy Boxing rounds. It’s not just about moving; it’s about moving with purpose. Breath keeps you grounded, focused, and in the zone. It powers your strength, deepens your stretch, steadies your balance, and brings it all together.

Types of Breathwork in Yoga:

Vinyasa uses steady, oceanic Ujjayi breath to link movement and breath, building heat and rhythm throughout the flow.

Yin Yoga pairs slow, deep belly breathing or extended exhales with long-held poses to encourage release, stillness, and introspection.

Savasana Meditation uses natural breath, box breathing, or alternate nostril breathing to guide the body into deep rest, presence, and energetic balance.

Breathe Better, Stress Less

At Upstate, breath isn’t just something you do—it’s your secret weapon. Whether you’re in class, mid-meeting, or just trying to keep your cool at the lights on Kings Way, how you breathe changes everything.

Here’s how we use breath in our classes—and how you can take that calm, grounded energy with you into everyday life:

Box Breathing
You’ll feel this one in Yin + our cooldowns
It’s all about breathing in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4. It’s simple, powerful, and hits the reset button on your nervous system. Hello calm.

Use it when: you’re feeling scattered, stressed or need a mental pause between work and the next thing on your to-do list.

Ujjayi Breath
This one’s your flow buddy in Yoga
Also known as ocean breath (yes, it literally sounds like waves), Ujjayi is all about slowing down and tuning in. You’ll feel more connected to your movement and locked into the moment.

Use it when: you need to refocus, clear your head or coast through the chaos.

Lateral Breathing
Pilates pros, this one’s for you
Think big, wide breaths into the ribs while keeping your core fired up. It keeps you stable, strong, and super switched on during movement.

Use it when: you’re carrying shopping bags, sitting tall at your desk, or just wanna feel strong in your body.

Real talk: Your breath is a game-changer

You take 20,000+ breaths a day—why not make a few of them count? Whether you’re flowing on the mat or powering through your day, conscious breathing helps you stay cool, calm, and connected.

Breathe better. Move stronger. Feel the vibes.
You’ve got this 💛
