What Actually Happens in Pilates Instructor Training?

So, you’re thinking about becoming a Pilates instructor…

Cute. Exciting. Slightly terrifying. Very normal.

Maybe you’ve been lying on the reformer mid-lunge thinking, “Could I teach this?”
Maybe you love Pilates so much you’ve started accidentally cueing your friends at brunch.
Or maybe you’re just ready for a new chapter and Pilates keeps tapping you on the shoulder saying, “Hello, pick me.”

But what actually happens in Pilates Instructor Training?

Let’s break it down.

First things first: you don’t need to be perfect

A lot of people think they need to be the strongest, bendiest, most coordinated person in the room before they can become an instructor.

You absolutely do not.

Pilates Instructor Training is not about proving you can do the hardest version of every exercise. It is about learning how to teach movement safely, confidently and clearly.

You are there to learn. That means asking questions, getting things wrong, laughing at yourself, trying again, forgetting your left and right, and slowly building confidence.

Honestly, if you mix up your left and right at least once, welcome. You are one of us now.

You learn the exercises, but in a whole new way

As a member, you might know what a lunge feels like.

As an instructor, you learn how to teach it.

That means understanding:

  • what the exercise is targeting
  • how to set it up safely
  • what springs or props to use
  • what common mistakes to look for
  • how to modify it
  • how to challenge it
  • how to cue it without saying 400 words at once

This is where Pilates starts to click in a totally different way.

You stop just doing the movement and start understanding the why behind it.

You learn how to cue without sounding like a robot

Cueing is one of the biggest parts of instructor training.

At first, it can feel very weird.

You’re suddenly saying things like, “Draw your ribs in,” “Press through your heels,” and “Find length through the crown of your head,” while trying to remember the exercise, the springs, the timing, the breath, the next move and whether the music is too loud.

A casual brain workout.

But with practice, cueing starts to feel more natural. You learn how to give clear, simple instructions and guide people through class without over-talking or panic-talking.

Both are very real phases. We respect the journey.

You practise teaching, a lot

Instructor training is practical.

Yes, there is theory. Yes, there is anatomy. Yes, you will learn about safety, programming, class planning and movement principles.

But a huge part of the course is getting up and teaching.

You’ll practise using your voice, setting up exercises, correcting alignment, offering modifications and holding the room.

Will it feel awkward at first? Probably.

Will you survive? Absolutely.

Will you eventually start to feel like maybe, just maybe, you can do this? Yes. That is the whole point.

You learn how to plan a class that actually makes sense

A good Pilates class is not just a random list of exercises thrown together with a playlist and a dream.

There is structure. There is flow. There is balance.

In training, you learn how to build a class that has a clear beginning, middle and end. You learn how to move clients through different positions, muscle groups and planes of movement so the class feels smooth, strong and intentional.

Basically, we teach you how to avoid creating a class that feels like:
“Here’s legs. Now arms. Now panic. Now plank. Good luck.”

You learn modifications and challenges

One of the best skills you’ll build is learning how to teach different bodies in the same room.

Not everyone will need the same option.

Some clients need more support. Some need more challenge. Some need a different setup. Some just need you to explain it in a way that finally makes sense.

Instructor training helps you understand how to offer options without making anyone feel singled out.

Because modifications are not the “easy option.”
They are the appropriate option.

Big difference.

You learn how to find your teaching voice

This is the fun part.

Every instructor has their own style. Some are calm and grounding. Some are high-energy and spicy. Some are technical. Some are playful. Some are a mix of all of the above.

Instructor training helps you start finding your voice.

You learn how to bring your personality into the room while still teaching safely and clearly.

At Upstate, we want you to feel confident being yourself, not like you have to copy someone else’s teaching style.

The world does not need 20 identical Pilates instructors. It needs instructors who know what they’re doing and feel like real humans.

You get feedback, and yes, it helps

Feedback can feel scary at first, but it is honestly where so much growth happens.

You’ll get support on your cueing, confidence, class flow, safety, spring choices, room presence and teaching style.

Not in a “this is terrifying and I’m being judged” way.

More in a “we can see your potential and we’re helping you get there” kind of way.

Training is a safe space to practise, mess up, ask questions and improve.

You build confidence you didn’t know you had

One of the best parts of Pilates Instructor Training is watching people grow.

Students often start the course nervous, unsure and wondering if they are actually capable.

Then somewhere along the way, something shifts.

They start cueing louder.
They move around the room with more confidence.
They stop apologising before every sentence.
They realise they can hold the room.

And that is the good stuff.

So, what actually happens?

You learn.
You practise.
You ask questions.
You probably get nervous.
You definitely grow.
You learn anatomy, exercises, cueing, class planning and safety.
You build confidence.
You meet people on the same path.
You start seeing Pilates through a completely different lens.

And by the end, you are not just someone who loves Pilates.

You are someone who can teach it.

Thinking about becoming a Pilates instructor?

Maybe this is your little nudge.

Our Pilates Instructor Training is designed to help you feel confident, supported and ready to teach, even if you’re starting with nerves, questions and a very normal fear of speaking into a microphone.

You don’t need to have it all figured out before you start.

That is what training is for!
