For most first timers, the thought of meditation can be a little daunting and you might find it easy to talk yourself out of it the first few times. We’ve all been there, telling ourselves we don’t have time or there’s more important things to get done. When the truth is, you can always find time.
The process of meditation is easy – to sit and do nothing. All you have to do is close your eyes, focus on your breathing and let your mind do it’s thing. As crazy as it sounds, we know this can be hard, so here’s a few pointers to help you get started…
Choose a time and a place that feels good to YOU.
Ok so the first thing we’re going to ask you to do is aim for a regular practise. Try to lock in at least 3 times a week where you carve out time for your meditation. Once you’ve done that we want you to choose a spot that feels good. Once you’ve chosen a time and a place, stick to it. You want meditation to become a habit.
Start small
As a beginner, sitting in silence for a long period of time can sound overwhelming. We recommend starting out small. Maybe it’s 10 minutes or maybe it’s a 3-5 minute meditation. Choose a duration that will fit into your life. Once you build up your confidence you can start to make your meditations a little longer each time.
How to sit
That’s the great thing about meditation, you can do it anywhere. Inside, outside, on a chair, on the floor – wherever you feel most comfortable! As a beginner you might find it easier to sit on a chair for your first few sessions.
Know your motivation
Have a clear reason as to why you are wanting to introduce this practice into your life. It can be anything! Maybe you want to feel happier or less stressed or more focused. Whichever it is, make sure it’s clear as it will also help your meditation practice become a habit.
