Local Eats – Little Green Corner Geelong

by Gail Asbell

In a time when things are constantly being overcomplicated, coming home to a wholesome and simple café feels very good. And that is exactly what Little Green Corner is. And a local favourite of ours.

The name is rather fitting, as the café sits on a corner with half the building painted white, half green. You’re bound to spot it. Once you head inside, you’ll find large communal wooden tables (built on crates), exposed brick, menus written on black boards hanging around the walls, and greenery sprouting everywhere. The green and white tiles, along with the wooden coffee bench all round out the space beautifully, making it warm, inviting, and homey.

The menu is small but considered. And it’s driven by local and sustainable produce. Including produce from a farmer called Bruce who farms out in Connewarre, found around 20k from Geelong. On top of sourcing produce from local farmers, diners can try their hand at farming too. If you’ve got a good piece of something, you can trade it in for a hot cup of coffee. You’ll even find signs from time to time, listing what the kitchen could really use more of. They love the idea of working on trade rather than money.

While the menu changes depending on what’s available and growing well, you’ll find the likes of oat porridge served with fruit, or potato waffles with smoked market fish, pickled onion, and wild greens for breakfast, while a soup of the day, braised lamb shoulder with Persian salad, and a pine mushroom risotto takes care of the lunch offering.   Completely dedicated to sustainability, owners Hugh and Claire have cut out as much packaging and waste from their supply chain as possible. This means that sparkling water comes on tap (avoiding bottles), the staff hand make the cafe’s almond milk (made from almonds bought at the wholefoods store across the road) and even the eggs come with minimal packaging.

Sometimes we need a helping hand to remember a simpler time. Thanks Little Green Corner.
